Verdant
You take on the role of a houseplant enthusiast trying to create the coziest interior space by collecting and arranging houseplants and other objects within your home. You must position your plants so that they are provided the most suitable light conditions. Take good care of them to create the most verdant collection.
Gameplay
Each turn, you select an adjacent pair of a card and token, then use those items to build an ever-expanding tableau of cards that represents your home. You need to keep various objectives in mind as you attempt to increase plant verdancy by making spatial matches and using item tokens to take various nurture actions. You can also build your “green thumb” skills. These skills allow you to take additional actions to care for your plants and create the coziest space!
There are two decks of cards. One with plants of five varieties (colours). Each card shows which of the three lighting conditions the plant thrives in. It shows the level of verdancy required to complete and a number of points gained. The second deck has rooms which have one of the five colours, a lighting condition on each of the four sides and a space for an item. Four of each card are dealt into two rows and one of each card to every player which to begin their tableau. There’s a bag with a large number of items, four of them are placed between the two rows of cards. Items are either one of three gardening tools which allow adding additional verdancy to plants, or furniture or pets.
Players take turns to draft one adjacent card and item. They add the card to their tableau to build up a five by three grid, alternating plants and rooms. Cards must be placed adjacent to an existing card.
Summarised
Verdant is a puzzly spatial card game for 1 to 5 players. From the designers who brought you Ten and Point Salad. This is certainly a game where it feels impossible to get everything done. Players need to choose whether to focus on large plants with lots of points, small plants and pot bonuses or collecting a large set of different furniture. All appear to be viable strategies and scores are often close despite taking different routes.
